The new anime feature "The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf", is both a spinoff and prequel to "The Witcher" live-action series, focusing on the origin story of fellow witcher 'Vesemir', mentor to 'Geralt', streaming August 23, 2021 on Netflix:
"The Witcher' started as a series of fantasy novels and short stories by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, following 'Geralt of Rivia', a 'beast hunter' who developed supernatural abilities at a young age to battle monsters.
"...the 'Continent, was settled several thousand years earlier by 'elves' from overseas. When they arrived, the elves encountered 'gnomes' and 'dwarves'.
"After a period of war between the elves and dwarves, the dwarves retreated into the mountains and the elves settled in the plains and forests.
"Human colonists arrived about five hundred years before the events in the stories, igniting a series of wars. The humans were victorious, and became dominant; the non-human races, now considered second-class citizens, often lived in small ghettos within human settlements. Those not confined to the ghettos lived in wilderness regions not yet claimed by humans.
"Other races on the Continent include 'halflings' and 'dryads', with 'werewolves' and 'vampires' appearing after the magical event, 'Conjunction of the Spheres'. During the centuries preceding the stories, the Continent's southern regions were taken over by the 'Nilfgaard Empire', with the north belonging to the fragmented 'Northern Kingdoms'.
The books have been adapted into graphic novels and TV series "The Hexer" and "The Witcher".
Video games include "The Witcher", "The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings" and "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt", selling over 33 million copies worldwide.
