There's Something About 'Mary Jane' - Part 1

Marvel Comics has revealed the first of its variant 'Mary Jane' comic book covers for June 2017, showcasing the love interest of 'Spider-Man' as various Marvel superhero characters:

'Mary Jane Watson' was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, debuting in Marvel's "The Amazing Spider-Man" #25 (June 1965)...

"...as the best friend, main love interest of 'Peter Parker'/'Spider-Man'.

But her face was never revealed, as a running joke, until the strip was taken over by illustrator John Romita.

Romita said that he designed Mary Jane, "...using Ann-Margret from the movie 'Bye Bye Birdie' as a guide...

"...using her coloring, the shape of her face, her red hair and her form-fitting short skirts."

In 1987, the character was married to 'Spider-Man' in "The Amazing Spider-Man Annual" #21.

Stan Lee decided to marry the characters in his daily newspaper strip...

"...and although the two were not even dating at the time in the comic book series, it was decided to marry them in the regular 'Marvel Universe' as well.
