Screen Gems Plays With "Mortal Instruments"

Screen Gems has teamed with Constantin Film and Unique Features to develop "Mortal Instruments" based on author Cassandra Clare's fiction book series.

The first screenplay adaptation, by Jessica Postigo, is based on the "...funny, dark and sexy" first book in the series, "City of Bones."

"...When fifteen-year-old 'Clary Fray' heads out to the 'Pandemonium Club' in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a crime—much less a killing committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos, brandishing bizarre weapons. Clary knows she should call the police, but it's hard to explain when the body disappears into thin air and the perps are invisible to everyone but Clary. Equally startled by her ability to see them, the killers explain themselves as 'Shadowhunters', a secret tribe of warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of 'demons'. Within twenty-four hours, Clary's mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a monster. How did Clary suddenly get the 'Sight'? The Shadowhunters would like to know..."

Constantin Film's head of Film & TV Martin Moszkowicz will executive produce for producer Robert Kulzer via Constantin Films along with Michael Lynne, Robert Shaye, and executive producer Dylan Sellers for Unique Features.

Zack Snyder's "Man Of Steel"

According to reports, director Zack Snyder ("Watchmen") is in current negotiations to direct the new "Superman" feature, titled "Man Of Steel", for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures.

Warners previously released Snyder's Montreal-lensed "300" and Vancouver-lensed "Watchmen". In March the studio will release Snyder's Vancouver-lensed "Sucker Punch".

Director/producer Christopher Nolan ("Batman Begins") will oversee the reboot.

Screenplay of the new film is by David S. Goyer ("Blade") , based on a story by Goyer and Nolan, who will produce with Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder.

Legendary's Thomas Tull will executive produce.

Warners will have to greenlight the feature before losing 'certain rights' to the character in 2013, after a judge recently ruled on behalf of the heirs of "Superman" comic book creator Jerry Siegel.
