Rose McGowan Boards "Conan"

Actress Rose McGowan ("Grindhouse") has been cast in the Nu Image/Millennium Films production "Conan", adapting the 'sword 'n sorcery' stories by author Robert E. Howard.

The feature started shooting March 15 @ Nu Boyana Studios, Sofia, Bulgaria.

McGowan, who will play an evil half-human/half-witch in "Conan" is also attached to star in the Nu Image/Millennium Films production "Red Sonja", also based on a Robert E. Howard character.

Hawaiian-born actor Jason Momoa, who played 'Ronon Dex' in the Vancouver-lensed "Stargate Atlantis" TV series has been cast as the 'Cimmerian' mercenary "Conan", directed by Marcus "Friday The 13th" Nispel from a screenplay by Joshua "Sahara" Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean "Cowboys & Aliens" Donnelly, adapting Howard's "Weird Tales" pulp magazine stories of the 1930's.

Joe Gatta and Avi Lerner of Millennium Films are producing "Conan" in association with Paradox Entertainment president/CEO Fredrik Malmberg, rights holder to the Howard estate.

Millennium is eyeing a potential franchise and R-rating for the sex/violence costume feature, budgeted in the $85 million budget range.

"The story opens on the battlefield where Conan is born and tells the origin story that sets the stage for what will be the first of multiple films," said Lerner.

'Conan the Cimmerian' , created in 1932 has since appeared in licensed books, comics, films, television programs and video games. 'Conan the Barbarian' is also the name of a Gnome Press collection of stories published in 1954, comics published by Marvel and Dark Horse, paperback novels, feature films and a TV series.

Nispel said the look of the film will reflect the paintings of iconic 'Conan' illustrator Frank Frazetta
