"Star Trek: Of Gods and Men" is a $250,000 budgeted independent 'fan' feature reuniting "Star Trek" series actors Nichelle 'Uhura' Nichols and Walter 'Chekov' Koenig in a continuation from the original TV series.
"This was a way of looking back ... to celebrate this modern mythology that Gene Roddenberry created," said producer Sky Conway.
To film the story depicting 'Starfleet members trapped in an alternate reality, the crew filmed in upstate New York, where a "Star Trek" hobbyist had created a $100,000 replica of the bridge of the 'USS Enterprise' starship.
Koenig reprised his role as 'Chekov', in a script that provided more opportunity for the actor to develop his iconic character. "It was something I could sink my teeth into and investigate emotionally," he said.
Aside from Koenig, veterans of other sci fi TV series including "Deep Space 9," "Voyager," "Enterprise," and "The Next Generation" also worked on the 2006 summer shoot.
After principal photography, it took two years for volunteers to create the film's elaborate special-effects sequences.
