Writer Stuart "Collateral" Beattie will script "G.I. Joe" for Paramount Pictures, based on the Hasbro action figure toy line.

Paramount is targeting "G.I. Joe" for a summer 2009 release.

The cartoon version featured soldiers from all branches of the military fighting the group 'Cobra' and the villains 'Cobra Commander', 'Baroness' and 'Destro'.

The good guy 'Joes' include 'Duke', 'Snake Eyes' and 'Scarlett'.

Stephen "The Mummy" Sommers will direct "G.I. Joe" for producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Hasbro's Brian Goldner.

The Hasbro toy creation has spun-off into comic books, cartoons and CG animation, but has yet to make the jump to live-action.

The new "G.I. Joe" characters will work for the "Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity", dedicated to fighting the reptilian 'COBRA' syndicate.
