Warner Bros. has optioned a screenplay by Paul Sopocy adapting the 1980's animated TVseries/toy line "Thundercats" into a CGI-animated feature.

Paula "Blood Diamond" Weinstein will produce through her Spring Creek Prods., with Dick Robertson and Lew Korman.

"Thundercats" are a den of humanoid felines, including 'Lion-O', 'Tygra', 'Panthro' and 'Cheetara' who flee the planet 'Thundera' after it is destroyed.

Crash-landing on 'Third Earth', they battle the evil sorcerer 'Mumm-Ra'.

The Sopocy screenplay is an origin story expanding on the animated series, with Lion-O coming of age as the leader of the team.

"Thundercats" debuted in 1983, spawning several animated series, and LJN toy line and comic books published by both Marvel and DC imprints.

Warner Bros. has owned the rights to the animated series after acquiring Telepictures Corp. in 1989.
