This is Sparta: $70 Million Weekend

Warner Bros., Montreal-shot "300", based on the graphic novels by Frank "Sin City"Miller, raked in over $70 million at the North American weekend box office, opening in more than 3,100 theaters, with a per-theatre average of $22,567.

Warners said the demos for "300" were equally split between men and women, owing to the accumulated internet buzz created by comic book/action movie fans, starting when the $60 million-budgeted film began pre-production in a Montreal warehouse last year, using CG/blue screen to recreate ancient 'Sparta'.

The film also played well on giant Imax screens, drawing a $54,500 per-screen average.

Zack "Dawn Of The Dead" directed "300", produced by Mark Canton, Gianni Nunnari, Jeff Silver and Bernie Goldmann.
