The Heat Is On For Mignola's "Hellboy 2"

During Toronto's recent Canadian Fan Expo panel, comics artist/writer Mike Mignola of "Hellboy" fame was asked about Universal's upcoming feature sequel "Hellboy 2: The Golden Army".

"It's a tough sell. It's not really a super-hero movie," he said.

"It's too odd for most people. It's not "Spider-Man"."

Mignola said the premise of "Hellboy 2", written in collaboration with returning director Guillermo "Pan's Labyrinth" del Toro, involves folklore characters, ie. 'elves' and 'goblins', who decide they don't want to go away.

"It's some of those characters saying, 'We're not going to go. Let's reclaim this world. It was ours once'".

Actor Ron Perlman will return as 'Hellboy', Selma Blair as 'Liz Sherman' and Doug Jones as 'Abe Sapien'.

Production on "Hellboy 2" is scheduled to start March 2007.

The first "Hellboy" feature was produced by Joe Roth's now defunct Revolution Studios.

In other news, Mignola said he had not seen voice-over actor Paul Giamatti's "Amazing Screw-On Head" animated pilot for Sci Fi Channel. He said the original comic book was always intended as a 'one-shot' and that the show's creators are at liberty to make whatever 'changes' are necessary to ensure the property is picked up as a TV series.
