Author Robert E. Howard's sword 'n sorcery character "Red Sonja" will return to the big screen courtesy Millennium and Emmett/Furla Films.
Millennium's Avi Lerner and Danny Dimbort will finance and produce the film with Emmett/Furla, reportedly budgeted north of $25 million.
In 2005, Dynamite Entertainment launched a new "Red Sonja" best-selling comic book series, effectively revitalizing the character.
The original pulp mag character, created in the 1930's by Howard of "Conan" fame, was re-introduced by Marvel in 1973, in a "Conan the Barbarian" comic book series. The character was soon given its own title and various guest spin-offs.
In 1985, a "Red Sonja" movie, starring actress Brigitte Nielson, directed by Richard Fleischer, was released by MGM.
"It is a great character and a great brand," said Joe Gatta of Millennium Films.
Other producers involved in the film include M. Dal Walton III, Luke Lieberman, Nick Barrucci, Trevor Short, and Boaz Davidson.
