Human Touch For CG Jones
Doug Jones, the 6', 4", 140 lb actor who portrays Marvel Comics' the 'Silver Surfer' in the upcoming Vancouver-shot "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer", has used stage training in mime and skills as a contortionist to become one of the most sought-after 'creature' actors in the business.
For director Guillermo del Toro, Jones played a 'cockroach' in the Toronto-shot 1997 horror thriller "Mimic", then appeared in del Toro's comic book-to-film "Hellboy", playing aquatic 'Abe Sapien'.
In del Toro's current "Pan's Labyrinth", Jones plays 'Pan'.
"He has an intelligence and a sensibility that is able to shine through the makeup," said del Toro. "That is a gift that not all actors have. "
"If you want the movement and performance and character with a story line, you need to have an actor," said Jones.
"I consider myself an actor first, not a suit performer."
Set in post-war, Franco-ruled Spain, "Pan's Labyrinth" stars actress Ivana Baquero as 'Ofelia', a young woman forced to move to a military outpost commanded by her stepfather (Sergi López). To escape the isolation, Ofelia retreats to an old garden near her house, uncovering magical elfin creatures presided over by Pan.Regarding CGI character misfires like Universal's take on "The Hulk", Jones says "...what I think they found is that they missed a certain performance element that only human beings can give...
"What has happened is that they have realized they can enhance (characters) with CGI seamlessly now. It's like the best of both worlds coming together."

Gans Is Game For Onimusha
Director Christophe "Brotherhood of the Wolf" Gans, fresh off the success of his Ontario-shot, big screen video game adaptation 'Silent Hill", is in development on another games adaptation, titled "Onimusha", based on the PlayStation 2 action-adventure series by Capcom.
The game features a protagonist wielding the power of 'Oni', fighting the demonic 'Genma' race who are in league with evil historic Japanese figures attempting to control the world through supernatural means. The game is a combination of third person combat and puzzle solving, with a system of 'absorbing' souls from defeated enemies to restore health and power-up weapons/armor capabilities.
Onimusha is Capcom's 4th biggest franchise, behind "Resident Evil", "Mega Man" and "Street Fighter".

Lucas Whipping Up More "Indiana Jones"
George Lucas said that production of the next "Indiana Jones" movie will begin next year.Actor Harrison Ford, who appeared in three earlier Jones films, is set to star again.
Lucas said he and director Steven Spielberg recently finalized the script for the film.
"It's going to be fantastic, " said Lucas. "It's going to be the best one yet..."
Exact film locations have not been decided yet, but Lucas said part of the movie will be shot in Los Angeles.
The fourth chapter of Paramount's "Indiana Jones" saga will be released May 2008.Lucas said the film will be a "character piece" that will include "very interesting mysteries."
"I think it's going to be really cool," he said.
"Mostly it's the charm of Harrison that makes it work".

True Romance For Betty & Veronica
'Betty' and 'Veronica' are getting a makeover in the pages of "Betty & Veronica Double Digest", May 2007.Four issues, starting with issue No. 151, May 14, will each feature a serialized story of 26 pages drawn in the new style.
The story focuses on 'Nick St. Clair' who rides into Riverdale on his motorcycle:
"Veronica is smitten. She likes Nick's air of assurance and his knack for getting noticed. The only problem is that Nick attracts attention for doing the wrong thing and he quickly starts to alienate all of Ronnie's friends, especially Betty. Is handsome rebel Nick St. Clair the boy of Veronica's dreams, or just plain trouble? Will Betty and Veronica's friendship come to an end over the new boy in town? "
"What we're doing is appealing to a slightly older female audience who are ready to move on from reading our comics to some other medium," said Archie Comics publisher Michael Silberkleit.
"If we can get them interested in this more involved story, a romantic novel, we can keep the readers for a little longer...we like to listen to our fans, and we had received some e-mails saying, 'Why don't you try something a little more realistic with the Archie characters or put a little romance into the story?'
"There will be no denigrating anybody, no putting down authority or family, no sex, no drugs. The characters will still wear seatbelts. There'll be no smoking. Nobody is going to break the law. It's going to be the same thing from dear old 'Riverdale' that we know and love."
Parker Gets Darker
"...the fans want to see 'Venom'," said "Spider-Man 3" director Sam Raimi."I come from a different generation. I read the comic books in the '70s, where it was 'Green Goblin', 'Sandman', 'Electro', 'Mysterio', the 'Vulture'. It was not until the late '80's that Venom came about. But (producer) Avi said, 'I'm telling you, they're waiting for him. Don't be selfish. Spider-Man is everyone's myth, not just yours.' "
"...I love Spider-Man. And I love working with Kirsten, Tobey, James...But I have to make sure that when I'm done with this picture I'm really still fascinated with the character. At this moment I'm fascinated with him...And I absolutely would not have anything to do with the picture unless I was hungry to tell the story."
