Johnny Winter "Live Through the '80s"- August 24

"Johnny Winter "Live Through the '80s" will be released in North America, August 24, from MVD Visual.
The new DVD includes a collection of official archival performance footage from around the world compiled from the original masters, featuring 18 performances from various locations includingas MTV Rock Influences '84 "Guitar Greats", Toronto's Massey Hall (Toronto '83), Roskilde DRTV (Roskilde, Denmark '84), New Hampshire ('84), Sonet Studio (Bromma, Sweden '87), Piazza Duomo (Pistoia, Italy '88), and a whole lot more.

Intermixed with the live content is interview footage showcasing the 'definitive' document of Winter's career throughout the 1980's.

"...The program kicks off in grand style with four performances culled from Johnny's long-sought-after 1983 appearance at Canada's Massey Hall. Leading his high-energy trio -- Jon Paris (bass, harmonica) and Bobby T. Torello (drums) -- with laser-like focus and fire-breathing intensity, the DVD opens with a blistering rendition of the Sonny Boy Williamson blues classic, "Unseen Eye."

"Next up is Johnny's original mid-tempo ballad, "Stranger," for which he plays a solo that is nothing short of a textbook of his virtuoso capabilities: with blazing speed and razor-sharp execution, Johnny's ideas flow from one to the next with his one-of-a-kind unrelenting drive and inspired, passionate execution.

"The Massey Hall segment rounds out with Johnny's original fingerpicked Delta-style blues workout, "Sweet Papa John," and the rock 'n' roll classic, "I Used to Love Her." The next two tracks come from Johnny's 1984 performance at the Capital Theater in Passaic, NJ, featuring the hard-driving shuffle "Mad Dog" (released on that year's Guitar Slinger [Alligator]) and the slow blues workout, "Good Times Woman."

With his newly acquired headstock-less Lazer guitar, Johnny plays with mind-boggling speed and flawless precision. Later that same year, Johnny performed in front of 100,000 people at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark, with Paris and new drummer Tom Compton. Four tracks are included from this outstanding performance: "Jumpin' Jack Flash," "Boot Hill," plus incendiary versions of two of Winter's signature tunes, Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" and Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." Shirtless and with his screamin' demon tattoo in full view, Johnny prowls the stage like a possessed madman.

"The fast rock 'n' roller "Lights Out [Guitar Slinger] and Johnny's old favorite, "Please Come Home for Christmas," filmed in 1984 in New Hampshire, are succeeded by two videos shot for Alligator Records: the Guitar Slinger version of "Don't Take Advantage of Me"-which was, at the time, shown in high rotation on MTV--and a very rare and candid interview with Johnny, during which he plays unaccompanied electric guitar. This DVD also includes rarely seen archival footage of Johnny riding his tour bus, talking candidly about his deep feelings for blues music, and relaxing backstage prior to a Swedish television appearance in 1987.

"Two songs are included from that performance: a rock-solid rendition of "Sound the Bell" (featuring subtle quotes from Freddie King's "Sen-Sa-Shun" and "San-Ho-Zay") and the hard-rocking shuffle that has become one of Johnny signature songs, "Mojo Boogie." The final segment of the DVD features two absolutely scorching performances from the 1988 Pistoia Blues Festival in Italy: the extended slow blues, "Early in the Morning," and a lightening fast version of "Serious as a Heart Attack."

DC Unleashes The New "Wonder Woman"

According to reports, DC Comics has 'updated' their female superhero character "Wonder Woman", with DC Comics co-publisher, illustrator Jim Lee re-designing her costume for 'the modern era' in collaboration with writer J. Michael Straczynski and artists Don Kramer/Michael Babinski.

"Wonder Woman" # 600, now available
"...begins a run that is both forward-looking and true to the legendary character, planting her firmly in the modern era..."

The character was created by pyschologist William Moulton Marston, ('Charles Moulton') who saw the “great educational potential of comic books”, and was subsequently hired as an ‘educational consultant’ for National Periodicals/All-Winner Comics (forerunners of DC Comics) in 1941, before creating a female comic book superhero, in a field dominated by male characters.

Marston was inspired by his lover Olive Byrne, who lived him and his wife in a ‘polygamous, polyamorous’ relationship. Having 2 children with both women, Marston said that both women served as exemplars for his character, subsequently illustrated by artist ‘Harry Peter’.

“Wonder Woman is psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should, I believe, rule the world,” Marston wrote at the time, defending his character’s look and sado-masochism, with every story highlighting women tied up either by a ‘magic lasso’ (of truth), chains, ropes, etc, in order to 'force obedience'.

“Not even girls want to be girls so long as our feminine archetype lacks force, strength, and power”, said Marston. "Wonder Woman satisfies the subconscious, elaborately disguised desire of males to be mastered by a woman who loves them.”

For Marston, Wonder Woman was not primarily a role model for girls, but the vehicle through which he could get young boys familiar with the idea of ‘dominating’ women.

“Women are exciting for this one reason — it is the secret of women’s allure — women enjoy submission, being bound”, Marston said.

“This I bring out in the ‘Paradise Island’ sequences where the girls beg for chains and enjoy wearing them”.

Virtually all th early “Wonder Woman” stories included a full-length WW in an oversized bondage panel. In one 1948 story, there were no fewer than 75 panels depicting bondage.

“The only hope for peace is to teach people who are full of pep and unbound force to enjoy being bound, ” said Marston.

“Only when the control of self by others is more pleasant than the unbound assertion of self in human relationships can we hope for a stable, peaceful human society.

"Giving to others, being controlled by them, submitting to other people cannot possibly be enjoyable without a strong erotic element…”

Lucasfilm Burning Mad Over Lightsaber Lasers

Lucasfilm Ltd. is concerned about the company Wicked Lasers, distributing a working 'Pro Arctic Laser' product designed to resemble the deadly 'lightsaber' from the "Star Wars" films.

“It has come to our attention that a company called Wicked Lasers is selling a highly dangerous product out of Hong Kong that is designed to look like a lightsaber from Star Wars", said Lucasfilm's General Counsel David Anderman.

"This product is not licensed or approved by Lucasfilm in any way. We have demanded that Wicked Lasers immediately cease and desist their infringing activities. As Wicked Lasers itself admits, this product can cause serious injury to the user and other people. We strongly discourage consumers from purchasing it.”

Wicked Lasers 'Spyder III Pro Arctic' laser, incorporating a burning blue beam using a laser diode from a laser home theater projector, comes equipped with consumer 'laser shades' safety goggles.

Wicked Lasers has issued the following legal disclaimer to all purchasers:

"...Warning: Extremely dangerous is an understatement to the power of 1W of laser power. It will blind permanently and instantly set fire quickly to skin and other body parts. Use with extreme caution and only when using the included eye protection. Customers will be required to completely read and agree to our 'Class IV Laser Hazard Acknowledgment Form'..."
