CRTC Says No To Internet Regulation...

The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunication Commission (CRTC), Canada's broadcast regulator has ruled that it will not regulate new media broadcasts, upholding a decision from 1999, with no re-examination of the new media issue for five years.
"While broadcasting in new media is growing in importance, we do not believe that regulatory intervention is necessary at this time," said commission chairman Konrad von Finckenstein.
"We found that the Internet and mobile services are acting in a complementary fashion to the traditional broadcasting system. Any intervention on our part would only get in the way of innovation."
"The reason the Internet has been so powerful and changed so much of our lives is because it hasn't been regulated and hasn't been taxed, and it's been allowed to grow and develop in ways that users wanted it to
grow," said Ken Englehart, VP Rogers Communications.
"Government regulation and taxation would slow us down."
"The rights of Canadians to talk and communicate across the Internet are vastly too important to be subjected to a scheme of government licensing," said Commisioner Timothy Fenton.
"If more Canadians were aware how close their communications have come to being regulated by this commission, not by our will, but because we administer an obsolete statute (the Broadcasting Act), they would be
rightly concerned..."

Warner Bros. is moving forward with their plans to turn MGM's Hanna-Barbera cat and mouse cartoon characters "Tom And Jerry" into big screen CG stars.
Producer Dan "Sherlock Holmes" Lin will adapt the Oscar winning duo for an origin story revealing how 'Tom' the cat and 'Jerry' the mouse first met before developing their psychotic relationship.
Screenplay is by Eric Gravning, writer of the upcoming features "B-Minor", Mr. Burnout" and "Class Act".
The CG/live-action model worked previously for Warners' "Scooby-Doo", with two features earning $457 million theatrically.
[i]Tom and Jerry[/i] originated as a series of 114 animated shorts, produced by MGM between 1940 and 1960, winnng seven Academy Awards.
Lin will produce "Tom and Jerry" through Lin Pictures, with Jon Silk co-producer...

Writer Jeff "Catch Me If You Can" Nathanson will both script and direct an adaptation of author William Kalush and Larry Sloman's "The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero" for Summit Entertainment, producers of "The Twilight Saga" film franchise.
The book, published in 2006, suggested that 'Harry Houdini', famous magician and escape artist, was a spy for Britain and adviser to Czar Nicholas II's court in pre-revolutionary Russia. 
The book also portrays Houdini as a 'debunker' of con artists, exposing 'fraud mediums' as part of his act, theorizing that his death from a blow to the stomach was caused by an organized conspiracy by the 'spiritualist 'movement.

Ryan Puts Up A Big Screen "Shield"...

Creator Shawn Ryan is looking to adapt his former FX TV series "The Shield" as a big screen feature starring actor Michael "Ben Grimm" Chiklis reprising his role as corrupt cop 'Vic Mackey'.
"If Fox hears 'the fans agitate' for more, it could very well pull together a feature film," said Ryan.
"The Shield" originally aired on FX Networks in the US, noted for its controversial portrayal of LA's 'dirty cops', originally titled "Rampart" in reference to the true life 'Rampart Division' police scandal that the show's 'Strike Team' was loosely based on.
The first season gained the most Emmy nominations for a basic cable drama, created by Ryan and The Barn Productions for Fox Television Studios and Sony Pictures Television (formerly Columbia TriStar Television).

The 70th anniversary of the National Film Board of Canada is being celebrated @ downtown Toronto's NFB Mediatheque with a free screening of Pepita Ferrari’s "Capturing Reality: The Art of Documentry", Tuesday, June 9 and Wednesday June 10.
Ferrari will be in attendance, joined by filmmakers Jennifer "Act Of God" Baichwal, Velcrow "Fierce Light" Ripper, Manfred "Fatherland" Becker and producer Michelle van Beusekom for a post-screening discussion.

"The Girl Cut in Two" ('La Fille coupée en deux") is a French comedy film directed by Claude Chabrol, starring actors Ludivine Sagnier, François Berléand and Benoît Magimel.
The film revolves around two men who vie for single young woman 'Gabrielle Deneige', a local TV weather girl.
Chabrol is noted as one of the core members of the French New Wave group of filmmakers who first came to prominence in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Like his fellow New Wave directors Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Éric Rohmer and Jacques Rivette, Chabrol worked as a critic for the influential film magazine "Cahiers du Cinema" before pursuing a career in filmmaking.
Often characterized as the most 'mainstream' of the New Wave directors, Chabrol at the age of 78, remains prolific and popular throughout a half-century career...

Columbia Moves Quickly On "Tom Swift"...

Columbia Pictures has acquired "Swift," from director Barry Sonnenfeld and Ben David Grabinski, as a potential feature film franchise updating the "Tom Swift" series of adventure novels.
Debuting in 1910, 'the Tom Swift' character is a young inventor in five series of juvenile science fiction/adventure novels, created by Edward Stratemeyer, founder of the Stratemeyer Syndicate book-packaging firm, to "take advantage of the market for children's science adventure".
The books were written by several ghostwriters over the years, published under the collective pseudonym 'Victor Appleton'.
Each series focused on Tom’s inventions, a number of which pre-dated actual inventions, selling over 20 million copies worldwide.
Sonnenfeld and Grabinski's version would feature Swift as one-half of a father-son team who are among the greatest inventors of all time.
Albie "Lemony Snicket" Hecht will produce with Sonnenfeld...
