“The Devil’s Brigade”, the 1968 WW II feature directed by Andrew V. Mclaglan, is based on the 1966 book by Robert H. Adleman and ‘Brigade’ member Col. George Walton, dramatizing the formation, training and first mission of the ‘1st Special Service Force’, a joint Canadian-American commando unit, with today’s ‘special operations’ forces, including ‘Green Berets’ and ‘Navy SEALS’, tracing their heritage to the Allies team:
“…the film dramatizes the first misssion of the ‘Devil’s Brigade’ in the ‘Italian Campaign’, tasked with capturing an impregnable German fortress…”
Historically, the unit also served in the Aleutian Islands and France.
In 2013, the ‘United States Congress’ passed a bill to award the ‘1st Special Service Force’ with a ‘Congressional Gold Medal’.
