"Kick-Ass" Director Gets Behind "Magic 8 Ball"

Mattel Films and Blumhouse Productions will produce a live-action feature adapting the "mystic, fortune-telling fun" of the 'Magic 8-Ball', to be co-written and directed by Jeff Wadlow ("Kick-Ass 2"):

"Since the 1950's, 'Magic 8 Ball' has inspired imagination, suspense and intrigue across generations," said Mattel. "This iconic toy has a built-in connection with fans and untapped potential for storytelling...."

"As fans of Mattel and their iconic brands, we're looking forward to bringing 'Magic 8 Ball', one of their most celebrated toys, to life..." said Blumhouse. "We look forward to partnering with Mattel Films to put this project on the fast track to the big screen and create a memorable experience for moviegoers."

Mattel Films is also developing "Barbie" with Margot Robbie's LuckyChap, "Hot Wheels", "Masters of the Universe", "American Girl" and "View Master".

"Magic 8 Ball" was invented in 1946 by Albert Carter, son of a clairvoyant, who marketed and sold the device with Abe Bookman of the Alabe Crafts Company.

The hollow, plastic sphere resembling an oversized billiard 8-ball, contains a cylindrical reservoir containing a white, plastic, 'icosahedral' die floating in alcohol and dissolved dark blue dye.

The die is hollow, with openings in each face, allowing the die to fill with fluid, giving the plastic die buoyancy. Each of the 20 faces of the die has an affirmative, negative, or non-committal statement printed in raised letters, with a transparent window on the bottom through which the messages can be read.
