Screenwriter Gary Whitta ("Rogue One: A Star Wars Story") and Jonathan Betuel are developing a reboot/sequel to "The Last Starfighter" (1984):
"'Alex Rogan' lives in a trailer park with his mother and younger brother. He also works as the trailer park's handyman.
"He often plays the space-battle arcade game 'Starfighter', as defender of 'the Frontier' from 'Xur' and the 'Ko-Dan Armada'...
"...becoming the game's highest-scoring player.
"Approached by the alien 'Centauri', the game's inventor, Alex accepts a ride in a car that becomes a spacecraft, traveling to the planet 'Rylos', while the android duplicate 'Beta' takes Alex' place during his absence..."
"Right now we have a fully developed story that is a combination of reboot and sequel that we both think honors the legacy of the original film," said Whitta, "while passing the torch to a new generation".
