According to Tom Rothman, chairman of the Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, directors of "The Lego Movie" and "21 Jump Street", will take 'Spider-Man' "...back to his graphic roots..." with a new animated "Spider-Man" feature, that will exist independently of the projects in the ongoing live-action "Spider-Man" universe:

'Spider-Man' will next appear in a live-action Marvel film from the 'Marvel Cinematic Universe' ('MCU'). Sony Pictures will then release the next installment of its "Spider-Man" franchise, July 28, 2017, in a live-action film produced by Marvel's Kevin Feige and Sony's Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago.

Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will also produce.

According to the studio, "...'Spider-Man', embraced all over the world, is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide..."
