Actor Robin Lord Taylor "The Walking Dead" will play 'Oswald Cobblepot' aka 'The Penguin' in the "Batman" live-action TV series prequel, "Gotham":
In the pilot, Cobblepot, described as having the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal "...is a low-level psychopath for gangster 'Fish Mooney' who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor..."
The character was created by illustrator Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, debuting in "Detective Comics" #58 (December 1941) as a a short, rotund man known for his love of birds and specialized high-tech umbrellas.
A mobster and thief, he fancied himself as being a 'gentleman of crime', with a nightclub business providing a cover for criminal activity.
According to Kane the character was inspired from the advertising mascot of "Kool" cigarettes – a penguin with a top hat and cane.
