"Spider-Man 4": 'Vulture' and 'Black Cat'

Director Sam Raimi apparently has regrets over not being asked back by Columbia Pictures to direct his "Spider-Man 4", that would have featured Marvel Comics' villain 'The Black Cat' played by Anne Hathaway and John Malkovich as 'The Vulture' .

"I loved what she was doing with the auditions for 'Spider-Man 4'," Raimi was reported to have said about Oscar winner Hathaway. "I didn't get to see 'Batman' yet, because I've been working nonstop on 'Oz', but I hear she's great in it."

Apparently Raimi couldn't meet Columbia's 2011 deadline for "Spider-Man 4" and passed on the series that was rebooted with director Marc Webb for "The Amazing Spider-Man" in 2012, with the studio not having to pay out huge sums of money for Raimi and his crew including lead actor Tobey Maguire, who was getting a bit 'long-in-the-tooth' to play teenage 'Peter Parker'.

The studio is also wrestling with the fact that for the developing "Ghostbusters 3" they will have to pay out millions of dollars in upfront and backend deals to director Ivan Reitman whereas a 'reboot' would give a fresh start to the franchise.
