FX has announced a deal that calls for 10 inital episodes of the new Charlie Sheen-starring TV series, "Anger Management", based on the 2003 slapstick comedy feature starring Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler film. There will be a possibility of an additional 90 episodes if the show succeeds.
Sheen will play a variation of the character 'Dr. Buddy Rydell', originally played by Nicholson.
Lionsgate ("Mad Men") will produce the series and distribute through its subsidiary Debmar-Mercury. with Sheen retaining a "significant ownership stake".
"I chose 'Anger Management' because, while it might be a big stretch for me to play a guy with serious anger management issues, I think it is a great concept," Sheen said.
"We have been fielding numerous offers for Charlie since his departure from 'Two and a Half Men'," said Sheen's manager Mark Burg of Evolution Management, "but none were as creatively and financially compelling as the package that Lionsgate, Debmar-Mercury, and Revolution presented us..."

Originally produced by Revolution Studios, the "Anger Management" feature followed 'Dave Buznik' who accidentally gets involved with the eccentric Rydell, while flying to a business meeting. Buznik is subsequently tasered, arrested, found guilty of assault, and sentenced to anger management therapy. Arriving at his first therapy session, he discovers that his therapist is Rydell.
Distributed by Columbia Pictures, gross revenue for "Anger Management" was $195,745,823 worldwide.
"I chose 'Anger Management' because, while it might be a big stretch for me to play a guy with serious anger management issues, I think it is a great concept," Sheen said.
"It also provides me with real ownership in the series, a certain amount of creative control and the chance to be back in business with one of my favorite movie producers of all time, Joe Roth."
