Johnny Depp: Never Too Rich Or Too "Thin Man"

According to reports, writer Jerry Stahl ("Bad Boys 2") is developing the screenplay for Warner Bros remake of "The Thin Man", for director Rob Marshall ("Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides").

The new film will be based on the 1934 detective novel by author Dashiell Hammett that previously spawned six MGM films, starring actors William Powell and Myrna Loy.

"'The Thin Man' has long been a favorite of mine and with Rob at the helm, I know we're in great hands," said Depp, who is looking to play protagonist 'Nick Charles'.

Depp and his production partner Christi Dembrowski will produce with former Warners executive Kevin McCormick.

Hammet's "The Thin Man", set in Prohibition-era New York City, follows former private detective, 'Nick Charles' and his wife 'Nora'. Nick, the son of a Greek immigrant, has given up his career since marrying Nora, a wealthy socialite, and he now spends most of his time cheerfully getting drunk in hotel rooms and speakeasies. Nick and Nora have no children, but they do own a clever dog named 'Asta'.

In the book, Nick is drawn, mostly against his will, into investigating a crime, bringing him in contact with the grotesque 'Clyde Wynant', the 'Thin Man' of the title. As they attempt to solve the case, Nick and Nora share a great deal of banter and witty dialogue, along with copious amounts of alcohol.
