Mike Newell Has "Great Expectations"

Mike Newell ("Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time"), will direct a new adaptation of author Charles Dickens book "Great Expectations", produced by Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen.

The Dickens novel was first published in serial form in the publication "All the Year Round" from December 1860 to August 1861.

Premise of "Great Expectations" follows the story of Pip, an English orphan who rises to wealth, deserts his true friends, and becomes humbled by his own arrogance. It also introduces one of the more colorful characters in literature: 'Miss Havasham'.

Dickens set the book during the time England was using machines to make factories more productive, leaving people behind to live in debtors' prisons and poverty.

The new film will be released in 2012, while the British Film Institute plans a retrospective that year of film/TV adaptations of Dickens' work, set for global tour including New York's Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Cinematheque Francaise in Paris.
