Director D. J. Caruso ("I Am Number Four") has confirmed that he will take on the big screen comic book adaptation of "Preacher", based on the 1995 DC Comics' Vertigo imprint series, created by writer Garth Ennis and illustrator Steve Dillon. 
The entire "Preacher" series consists of 75 issues, including 66 regular, monthly issues, five one-shot specials and a four-issue limited series. The final monthly issue was published July 2000.
Premise of "Preacher" follows 'Jesse Custer', a modern-day minister from 'Annville', Texas, who is accidentally possessed by a supernatural creature named 'Genesis', the product of an 'unnatural' coupling of an angel and a demon.
Driven by a strong sense of right and wrong, Custer goes on a journey across America, discovering the truth about his new powers and commanding the obedience of those who hear his sermons, joined by his girlfriend 'Tulip O'Hare' and the hard-drinking Irish vampire 'Cassidy'.
During the course of their journeys, the three encounter enemies and obstacles both sacred and profane, including a killer named 'Reaver-Cleaver', 'The Grail' organization that controls the governments of the world, 'Herr Starr', a megalomaniac with a penchant for prostitutes and Custer's own family including his Cajun grandmother, her bodyguard 'Jody' and animal lover 'T.C.'
"Preacher" garnered considerable praise/protest for its unapologetic handling of religious and supernatural themes, dark and violent humor and wide range of allusions to popular culture outside of comic books.
