Cobie Smulders Assembles For "The Avengers"

Further to our previous reports, Canadian actress Cobie Smulders ("How I Met Your Mother) has now been cast as the character 'Maria Hill' in Marvel Studios upcoming Paramount release "The Avengers", to be directed by Joss Whedon ("Buffy The Vampire Slayer").

A fictional character of the 'Marvel Universe', the Marvel Comics character debuted in Marvel's "New Avengers" #4 (March 2005), created by Brian Michael Bendis and David Finch.

Chicago-born Hill was the former Director of the planetary defense/intelligence service 'S.H.I.E.L.D.', joining the US armed forces, before becoming an agent of the organization.

After S.H.I.E.L.D. Director 'Nick Fury' went into hiding, Hill was appointed interim Executive Director, with a 'Life Model Decoy' of Fury, regularly used in public to maintain an illusion of normalcy within the Directorate's ranks.

Hill quickly established deterrent policies aimed at 'superheroes', as requested by the US President. These policies are in full effect when Hill tries to prevent the 'Avengers' superhero team from re-forming.
