Film Extras Dummy Up On Set

Gardena, California company "Inflatable Crowd" owns 30,000 inflatable dolls which it rents out to studios, to replace movie background performer 'extras'.

Notable movies using the dolls include director Clint Eastwood's upcoming Warners feature "Hereafter", Marvel's "Iron Man 2", Disney's "Step Up 3D", Sony's "Angels and Demons", Universal's "The Changeling", Warners "Ocean 13", Universal's "American Gangster", Sony's "Spider-Man 3", and Warners "Flags Of Our Fathers".

According to the company, producers prefer to rent the dolls because "union extras typically earn $135 a day, but rates can be as high as $300 with overtime..."

The recent film "Salt" used 500 of the company's dolls in a key scene.

The plastic dummies have appeared in a total of 90 films, following their debut in the 2002 feature "Sea Biscuit".

With a budget set at $70 million, Gans will also write the screenplay for the "Fantômas" 'detective fantasy' feature, with David Martinez, from an original story by Thomas Langmann.

The original police drama, lensed entirely on film by Thames Television's Euston Films, focused on two members of the 'Flying Squad', a branch of the Metropolitan Police specializing in tackling armed robbery and violent crime in London. Director Nick Love and series creator Ian Kennedy Martin, wrote the new screenplay, aiming for a production start by the end of the year. Click the images to enlarge and Sneak Peek "The Sweeney"...

Warners Mines "Outland"

Warner Bros. and Hollywood Gang Prods. continue developing a remake of writer/director Peter Hyam's 1981 sci fi feature "Outland" from a new screenplay by Chad St. John.

Premise follows a police marshal stationed at a remote mining colony on Jupiter's moon Io, where he uncovers a drug conspiracy threatening the 'Outland' existence.

Gianni Nunnari of Hollywood Gang will produce with Craig J. Flores executive producing.

"...'Marshal W.T. O'Niel' is assigned to a mining colony on Io, one of Jupiter's moons. During his tenure miners are dying - usually violently. When the marshal investigates he discovers the one thing all the deaths have in common is a lethal amphetamine-type drug, which allows the miners to work continuously for days at a time until they become "burned out" and expire. O'Niel follows the trail of the dealers, which leads to the man overseeing the colony. Now O'Niel must watch his back at every turn, as those who seek to protect their income begin targeting him..."

Producers says they are fond of the "High Noon" in outer space premise and intend to expand on the 'space frontier' concept.

What If ? : Big Screen "Garrison's Gorillas"

"Garrison's Gorillas" was an ABC TV series broadcast 1967-1968, with a total of 26 hour-long episodes produced. The series was 'inspired' by the 1967 war action feature "The Dirty Dozen", which featured a similar scenario of training Allied prisoners for World War II military missions.
"Garrison's Gorillas" focused on a motley group of commandos recruited from stateside prisons to use their special skills against the Germans in World War II.
The men were promised a parole at the end of the war if they worked out. And if they lived. The alternative was an immediate return to prison. If they ran, they could expect execution for desertion.
The four main characters were the con-man 'Actor' (Cesare Danova), a safecracker 'Casino' (Rudy Solari), a cat burglar 'Goniff' (Christopher Cary) and a native American with a switchblade 'Chief (Brendan Boone').
Led by West Pointer 'First Lt. Craig Garrison' (Ron Harper) and headquartered in a secluded mansion in England, the group ranged all over Europe in exploits that often took them behind enemy lines.
