Fincher Makes A Splash With "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea"
Director David Fincher ("Fight Club") will take on Disney's prequel remake of the feature "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea", based on the novel by French author Jules Verne.
Producer Wal Disney's original 1954 production, directed by Richard Fleischer, noted as the first science fiction film from Walt Disney Pictures, starred Kirk Douglas as 'Ned Land', James Mason as 'Captain Nemo', Paul Lukas as 'Professor Pierre Aronnax' and Peter Lorre as 'Conseil'.
The new film, titled "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo" will serve as an origin story for central character 'Captain Nemo', as he builds his warship, the 'Nautilus'.
Author Verne's novel "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" ("Vingt mille lieues sous les mers"), published in 1869, follows the story of 'Captain Nemo' and his submarine 'Nautilus' as seen from the perspective of 'Professor Pierre Aronnax'.
The story opens in the year 1866, with everyone talking about a mysterious creature that has been sinking ships. Finally, the US government decides to intervene and commissions the 'Abraham Lincoln' to capture and identify the creature. On board the ship are Aronnax, a renowned scientist, his servant Conseil and Ned Land, the king of whale harpooners.
When the Abraham Lincoln is attacked by the creature, Aronnax, Conseil and Land go overboard and find themselves on top of the mysterious creature, which is a submarine vessel. Taken on board they are placed in a cell and meet Nemo, commander of the vessel. He tells them they can stay on board the ship and enjoy freedom as long as they return to the cell if asked.
During their time on the sub, the men hunt in underwater forests, explore an island with angry natives, visit the lost city of 'Atlantis' and fish for giant pearls. After many harrowing adventures, including an encounter with a giant squid, the men plan their escape after Nemo sinks a warship without concern for the nation it represents or the sailors that are lost in the wreckage.
