Cruise Cast In Cronenberg's "Circle" ?...

Actor Tom Cruise is in talks to star with Denzel Washington in an MGM adaptation of author Robert Ludlum 's best-selling novel "The Matarese Circle", to be directed by Toronto's David Cronenberg.

Cruise and Washington would play enemy spies who, after spending two decades trying to kill one another, find themselves in the crosshairs of the 'Matarese', a powerful group at the root of a worldwide conspiracy.

Screenplay by writers Michael "Wanted" Brandt and Derek Haas, updates Ludlum’s original 'Cold War' premise.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Nick Wechsler will produce with Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith’s Captivate Entertainment. Henry Morrison is executive producer.

"Matarese Circle" is considered the 'marquee' film under the new MGM management team, led by Mary Parent, who was vice chairman at Universal while the "Bourne" series was put together.

Other MGM movie franchises aside from "James Bond" and "The Pink Panther" that will be updated under Parent will include 'The Thomas Crown Affair", "Death Wish"", Robocop", "Fame" and "The Outer Limits".

"Matarese" is expected to be released in 2010, with Cronenberg continuing his efforts to convince MGM to shoot at Toronto's Filmport Studios, North America's largest film studios...
