Actor Steve "The Sopranos" Buscemi will star as a racketeer in the period drama pilot "Boardwalk Empire," for HBO, directed by Martin "Mean Streets" Scorsese.

Kelly "Trainspotting" MacDonald will co-star.

"Empire", written by Terrence Winter is based on author Nelson Johnson's novel, focusing on the 1920's crime origins of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Buscemi will play businessman 'Nucky Johnson', who runs a liquor distribution ring at the onset of Prohibition, with Scottish actress Macdonald as 'Margaret', an Irish immigrant.

"Empire" is executive produced by Scorsese, actor Mark "Max Payne" Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Winter.

Buscemi earned an Emmy nomination for directing an episode of HBO's "The Sopranos" in 2001 and for acting in 2004, also receiving another nomination this year for a guest appearance on NBC's comedy "30 Rock".
