Starz Nails Down "Spartacus" TV Series...

Starz Entertainment, Sam "Spider-Man" Raimi, Rob "Xena" Tapert and Joshua Donen are executive producing an updated take of the historical gladiator uprising story "Spartacus" as a 13-episode TV series, with Steven S. DeKnight as head writer.

The series will start production in New Zealand in 2009 for a summer debut on Starz, budgeted at $2 million per episode.

'Spartacus', according to Roman historians, was a slave who became the leader of an unsuccessful slave uprising against the Roman Republic known as the 'Third Servile War'.

Previous film depictions include director Stanley Kubrick's 1960 feature adaptation of author Howard Fast's novel and USA Network's 2004 TV miniseries starring actor Goran Višnjić...
