Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce "Oz," a 'revisionist take' on author L. Frank Baum's, 15 public domain novels, starting with "The Wizard of Oz."

Project was acquired based on ideas from Canadian "Spawn" creator Todd McFarlane.

The screenplay will be written by Josh "A History Of Violence" Olson.

McFarlane will executive produce "Oz" with Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Rick "Shoot 'Em Up" Benattar.

McFarlane previously launched an "Oz" toy line, featuring a buxom 'Dorothy Gale'.

"You’ve still got Dorothy trapped in an odd place, but she’s much closer to the Ripley from ‘Alien’ than a helpless singing girl", said McFarlane.

"But", adds Olson, "we still want to take advantage of the first film, which might be the most beloved of all time, and rely on its place in your cultural memory to bubble beneath the surface."
