“Zulu”

“Zulu”, the 1964 action feature, based on a true story, directed by Hollywood ‘blacklisted’ screenwriter Cy Endfield, and produced by Brit actor Stanley Baker, introduces actor Michael Caine in his first major screen role, with Jack Hawkins, Ulla Jacobsson, James Booth, Nigel Green, Paul Daneman, Glynn Edwards, Ivor Emmanuel, Patrick Magee, an opening/closing narration by Richard Burton and a sweeping musical score by John Barry, of ‘James Bond’ movie fame, now restored and streaming for free on Tubi:

“…in 1879, Africa’s ‘Zulu’ nation hands colonial British forces a resounding defeat in battle…

“…as a nearby regiment of the ‘British Army’ takes over a station run by a missionary (Hawkins) and his daughter (Jacobsson) as a supply depot and hospital…

“…under the command of ‘Lieutenant John Chard’ (Baker) and his subordinate ‘Gonville Bromhead’ (Caine).

“Unable to abandon their wounded soldiers, the overwhelmed gun-blasting regiment defends their station, against  thousands of valiant spear-throwing Zulu warriors, with massive casualties on both sides.”

More than 50 years later, “Zulu” still experiences screening disclaimers, although regarded as one of the finest films ever produced by British cinema.
