Mattel Films (“Barbie”) has greenlit a live-action “Matchbox” movie, based on the die-cast car toy line, to be directed by Sam Hargrave (“Extraction”), starring John Cena (“Peacemaker”):
“Matchbox”, created by automotive expert Jack Odell for Lesney Products in 1953, was purchased in 1997 by “Hot Wheels” competitor Mattel, Inc.
The brand was given its name because original die-cast ‘Matchbox’ vehicles were sold in boxes similar to those in which matches were sold.
The brand grew to encompass a broad range of toys, including larger scale die-cast models, plastic model kits, slot car racing and action figures.
