'Woody Woodpecker' was created in 1940 by storyboard artist Ben "Bugs" Hardaway, who laid the groundwork for 'Bugs Bunny' and 'Daffy Duck' @ Warner Bros. in the late 1930's.
The 'anthropomorphic' acorn woodpecker cartoon character soon appeared in theatrical short films…

Woody's character and design would evolve over the years, from an insane bird with an unusually garish design to a more refined look.
