“Air” - Courting A Legend

2023 is turning out to be an impressive year for new 'sports'- themed movies, with an abundance of new titles quickly following up on the success of director Michael B. Jordan's ambitious boxing feature "Creed III" and director Ben Affleck's basketball feature "Air":

The following new sports films in 2023 have either already been released and are now available to watch on certain major movie streaming sites, or expected to screen in the coming months.

They include titles:

1. Creed III (running time – 1hr 57 mins)
2. Next Goal Wins (1 hr 37 mins)
3. Champions (2hr 3 mins)
4. Big George Foreman (2h 13 mins)
5. Air (1hr 52 mins)

Creed III

This movie is the latest instalment in a series of boxing-themed films, starring Michael B. Jordan, who also directed (in his directorial debut) and produced the movie, along with Sylvester Stallone. 'Adonis Creed' (played by Jordan) must prove himself in a boxing match against a former childhood friend who was recently released from jail. This boxing-inspired film was relatively well-received by moviegoers and critics alike, and it has received a 7.1 IMDB score, 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 73% on Metacritic.

Online sports betting in Canada, where you can bet on upcoming boxing matches in the real world, is now possible at numerous fully licensed online bookmakers. However, to place boxing bets at sites like these, you must be at least 18 in Quebec, Alberta, and Manitoba.

In other provinces, such as Newfoundland, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Labrador, Ontario, and Prince Edward Island, you must be at least 19.

 Next Goal Wins

This upcoming sports film, scheduled for a September 2023 theatrical release, is based on a true story about the infamous 'FIFA' football match that saw 'American Samoa' lose 31-0 to Australia. It stars Michael Fassbender as the team’s coach, 'Thomas Rongen', and it was written and directed by Taika Waititi.

Champions

This sports film was released March 2023, loosely based on the true story of a minor league basketball team from Valencia with intellectual difficulties.

The coach is handed a court order to manage the team, and despite first having no belief in the team, he soon comes to realize they have a shot at being a success. It stars Woody Harrelson, Kaitlin Olson, Mike Smith, and Ernie Hudson, and it was directed by Bobby Farrelly.

Big George Foreman

This interesting true story is based on the life of former Olympic Gold medalist and WorldHeavyweight champion George Foreman

Khris Davis plays 'Foreman', who also has a role in the film, and Forrest Whitaker plays 'Doc Broadus'. 'The Big George Foreman' film was directed by George Tillman Jr., and it’s expected to arrive April 28, 2023.

Air

One of the most anticipated sports films of the year was the new Air movie, playing in theaters since April 5, 2023. It’s the true story of the Nike sports company pursuing 'Michael Jordan', who was just a young basketball rookie at the time. It features a huge cast, including major stars Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Viola Davis, Phil Knight, Chris Tucker, and Jason Bateman.

Ben Affleck directed it, and it has also received good reviews. It has a 7.8 IMDB score, 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 78% on Metacritic.

 Honorable mentions

Some of the other sports-themed films to check out in 2023 include "Sweetwater", "Chang Can Dunk", "80 for Brady" and "Maidan".
