With the US federal election looming on the horizon, there are new fears of 'DeepFake' synthetic media being used to excuse the disturbing actions of propped-up candidates, blaming machine learning and artificial intelligence for their own deceptions:

Basically, the main machine learning methods used to create 'deepfakes' involve training generative neural network architectures, such as 'autoencoders' or 'generative adversarial networks' (GANs).

Deepfake technology has already been used to insert faces into existing films, including the insertion of Harrison Ford's young face onto a 'Han Solo' face in "Solo: A Star Wars Story"...

...and techniques similar to those used by deepfakes were used for the acting of 'Princess Leia' in "Rogue One".
