Following actor Ben Affleck opting out as director of Warners "The Batman" and the studio concurrently in talks with Oscar winner Mel Gibson about directing "Suicide Squad 2", will Gibson decide to direct the new stand-alone "Batman" feature instead ?:
"There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions," said Affleck, still committed to producing and starring in "The Batman", after playing 'Bruce Wayne' in "Batman vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice" and the upcoming "Justice League".
"Performing this role demands focus, passion, and the very best performance I can give...Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film.
"I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.
"...with Batman, I keep on getting, ‘Where’s the fucking Batman?!'
"We're on the right track with that and everything is coming together. We're still finishing up a script. I think we’re ahead of the curve.
"I respect all of the movies. Christopher Nolan did an incredible job, Christian Bale did an incredible job, Tim Burton did an incredible job.
"At a certain point you have to look forward and try to believe in your own vision for it and not be looking over your shoulder the whole time.
"I go into that movie with a tremendous amount of respect for the people who came before me."
Affleck chose 'Deathstroke' as the new movie's Big Bad, because...
"He's a great villain. I just had an instinctive feeling that Batman would match up with him well..."
