“Alita: Battle Angel"

According to producers James Cameron and Jon Landau, Robert Rodriguez, director of "Sin City", is now in pre-production to helm the live-action 'female cyborg' feature "Battle Angel", based on the graphic novels by Yukito Kishoiro,  "exploring a young woman’s journey of self-discovery...":

"Robert and I have been looking for a film to do together for years," said Cameron, director of "Terminator", "Aliens" and "Avatar", "so I was pumped when he said he wanted to do 'Battle Angel'. He’s very collaborative and we’re already like two kids building a go-kart, just having fun riffing creatively and technically.

"This project is near and dear to me, and there’s nobody I trust more than Robert, with his technical virtuosity and rebel style, to take over the directing reins. We’re looking forward to learning a lot from each other while we make a kick-ass epic..."

"'Battle Angel' is an incredibly rich and vibrant epic in the tradition of Jim Cameron’s spectacular, character-driven films," said Rodriguez.

"Getting to work from Jim’s terrific and visionary script while learning the cutting edge techniques he’s pioneered is a master class in filmmaking. It’s an honor to explore the world of Alita along with Jim and Jon, whose films have impacted me for decades..."

"Battle Angel Alita" tells the story of 'Daisuke Ido', a future hunter-warrior, who digs out a 300-year old human head from the rubble of the 'Scrap Yard' then ghoulishly uses the remains to attempt to create a 'perfect' life. As Alita, the damaged 'battle angel' grows into her new arms and legs...and also grows in awareness.

"Why should I have to live the life you want for me?! I've got to find my own way," Alita cries to her creator.

Alita's shattered body is a metaphor for the unintegrated self and her successive battles (similar to the struggles of 'Ripley' in "Aliens" and 'Sarah Connor' in "Terminator") will take her closer to discovering who she is and what she wants.
