Could DC Merge With Marvel Superheroes ?

Will Walt Disney, the home of Marvel Studios and Marvel Comics make an offer to purchase Time Warner, home of Warner Bros and DC Comics, after a bid by Rupert Murdoch from 21st Century Fox of $80 billion was rejected ?

"...'The prospect of combining Disney's Marvel with Time Warner's DC Comics might be too compelling to ignore. Plus CNN would give Disney the cable news asset it lacks.

"'Disney's market cap as of Aug. 8 was $149 billion compared with Time Warner's $63 billion, which gives Disney CEO Bob Iger more leverage than Murdoch might have had'..."

"'Though it's on a much larger scale, Disney could then bring both Warner Bros. and DC Comics under their control with the likes of Lucasfilm, Marvel and Pixar.

"'For Silicon Valley companies, a (Disney) deal would make them instant players in the content business.

"'For Verizon, access to Time Warner could boost its pay-TV and broadband platforms..."

Consider one Marvel Comics property, "The Avengers" earned over $1 billion at the box office, with Disney still owning proprietary rights to an additional 7,000 characters.

DC Comics property 'Batman' in "The Dark Knight Rises", earned over $1 billion at the box office with DC still owning proprietary rights to an additonal 10,000 characters.

It would appear there could be a coming glut of superhero properties destined for the big screen, but the competition could be leveled out if there was only one player.
