"Flash Gordon" Returns To 'Mongo'

Twentieth Century Fox, looking to replace their coveted Lucasfilm "Star Wars" franchise continues to develop "Flash Gordon", the 1930's newspaper comics hero, that inspired the creation of "Star Wars" by George Lucas.

Producer is John Davis with a screenplay by J.D. Payne, Patrick McKay and George Nolfi.

Originally illustrated by Alex Raymond, "Flash Gordon" debuted January 7, 1934, inspired by the space adventures of "Buck Rogers".

'Flash Gordon', a polo player and Yale University graduate and his companions 'Dale Arden' and 'Dr. Hans Zarkov' start their journey together as Earth is bombarded by fiery meteors. Zarkov invents a rocket ship to locate their place of origin in outer space.

Half mad, Zarkov kidnaps Flash and Dale and the three travel to the planet 'Mongo', where they discover the meteors are weapons devised by 'Ming the Merciless', that planet's evil ruler.
