With Marvel Comics' 'The Scarlet Witch' now confirmed for "The Avengers 2", the female character 'Captain Marvel' (previously 'Ms. Marvel') could also be added to the roster of superheroes in director Joss Whedon's Marvel Studios' 3D feature, providing an easy opportunity to market the 'Marvel' brand name.
'Carol Danvers' was initially featured as the cosmic 'Captain Marvel' in a 'false reality' created by mutant (and former 'Avenger') the 'Scarlet Witch', before negotiating a deal with 'Tony Stark' and 'S.H.I.E.L.D.', to lead a covert strike team called 'Operation: Lightning Storm', dedicated to the elimination of 'supervillains' before they could become unstoppable global threats.
July 2012 Carol Danvers was officially promoted to the rank of 'Captain Marvel' in a new ongoing Marvel Comics series from writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and illustrator Dexter Soy.
