"The Walking Dead": A Death In The Family

One of the most popular characters on AMC's "The Walking Dead", ultra-violent 'zombie' dramatic TV series, has died during the Season 3 Finale titled "Welcome To The Tombs".

RIP 'Andrea' (Laurie Holden) :

Andrea debuted in episode two of "The Walking Dead", titled "Guts", when she and a group of survivors become trapped in a department store during a supply run. They are saved by 'Glenn' (Steven Yeun) and newcomer 'Rick' (Andrew Lincoln), and make it back to their camp, where Andrea reunites with her sister 'Amy'.

Several days later, the camp is overrun with walkers and Amy is bitten. Andrea holds her dead sister for hours until she 'reanimates', and she shoots her. The group then take shelter at the 'Center for Disease Control' ('CDC'), which is set to explode when the power runs out.

A depressed Andrea elects to stay behind and die. 'Dale' (Jeffrey DeMunn) attempts to convince her to leave and resolves to stay with her when she refuses. Unwilling to be responsible for Dale's death, Andrea changes her mind, and the two escape.

As the second season picks up, Andrea is angry with Dale for denying her the choice to die. This intensifies when Dale agrees with Rick and 'Shane Walsh' (Jon Bernthal) that only those who have been trained should be allowed firearms and later confiscates her father's gun.

Andrea later approaches Shane and asks to go with him should he leave the group. Dale soon returns Andrea's gun, but asks her not to give him cause to regret it. The group later sets up camp at a farm. While keeping watch, Andrea mistakes group member 'Daryl Dixon' (Norman Reedus) for a walker and grazes him with a bullet. He forgives her and Shane helps her improve her shooting skills. Shane and Andrea then form a close bond and have sex on their way back from a successful scouting mission.

Dale picks up on the implication of their sexual encounter and eventually expresses his distrust of Shane to her. Andrea insists that Shane has done more for the group than its leader, Rick.

'Lori' (Sarah Wayne Callies), Rick's wife, confronts Andrea about her contributions to the group, suggesting that her time would be better spent cooking and doing laundry than taking watch. Further conflict arises when Andrea leaves 'Beth Greene' (Emily Kinney), the farm owner's suicidal daughter, alone, giving her the chance to die should she wish to. Andrea, who was hoping that being left to herself would make Beth realize that she did not actually want to die, is pleased when she hears that Beth has only shallowly cut her wrist. Andrea, however, is then banned from the farmhouse by Beth's sister, 'Maggie' (Lauren Cohan).

When Dale tries to gain support to halt the execution of newcomer 'Randall' (Michael Zegen), Andrea is initially reluctant but eventually concedes that they should look for a different solution to keep the group safe. Andrea sobs over Dale's body as he succumbs to a fatal wound caused by a rogue walker and is shot in the head by Daryl in a mercy kill.

In the season finale walkers overrun the farm and Andrea is separated from the group, with them now believing her to be dead. She runs through the forest until morning, and confronts walkers with melee attacks. As one walker is about to attack her, she is saved by 'Michonne'.

Six to seven months afterward, Andrea and Michonne have strengthened their bond, the two of them having protected each other throughout the winter season. Andrea has recently developed the flu and believes herself to be dying.

She urges Michonne to move the two of them somewhere else, after having taken shelter in an abandoned deer locker for days. After witnessing a helicopter crash, the two of them are kidnapped by a group from a nearby town called Woodbury, run by psychotic killer the 'Governor'.

The Governor and Andrea develop a romantic relationship as she settles in to the town, at the expense of her friendship with Michonne. Andrea's decision to remain in town prompts Michonne to abandon her and leave, eventually meeting up with Rick's group.

Andrea is captured by the Governor and is trapped in a room with 'Milton', who bites her after he turns into a walker. Andrea is rescued by Rick and the others, but it is too late for her. Not wanting to turn into a walker, she is given a gun and she takes her own life.
