Opening May 24, 2013, the new film is described as "Avatar" meets "Gladiator":

The new film is stylistically inspired by the swashbuckling 'pirate' illustrations of 19th century painters N.C. Wyeth and Arthur Rackham :
"...'Epic' is a twist on 'Alice in Wonderland', in which the daughter (Amanda Seyfried) of an absent-minded professor catches a glowing, falling leaf and shrinks into a hidden world.
"There nature is protected by 'Leafmen', 'samurai-like' warriors that ride hummingbirds, led by 'Ronin' (Colin Farrell).
"Encountering a Leafman (Josh Hutcherson), the 'Mother Nature' of the forest (Beyonce), with her snail sidekicks (Aziz Ansari, Chris O'Dowd), fight the villain 'Mandrake' (Christoph Waltz), leader of the 'Boggans' and dedicated to the destruction of the forest..."
