The film adapts Victor Hugo's 19th century novel, following 'Jean Valjean', a paroled prisoner, who becomes a popular mayor of a town in France. When Valjean agrees to take care of 'Cosette', the illegitimate daughter of 'Fantine', he must avoid being captured again by 'Javert', a police inspector.
