ABC Greenlights Marvel's Agent Of "S.H.I.E.L.D."


According to reports, Disney-owned ABC has greenlit a live-action TV pilot adapting Marvel Comics' "S.H.I.E.L.D" , to be written and directed by Joss Whedon ("The Avengers"). Whedon will script the pilot with his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen ("Dollhouse").


'S.H.I.E.L.D.', the espionage and secret military law-enforcement agency in the Marvel Comics Universe was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Marvel Comics' "Strange Tales" #135 (Aug. 1965).


The acronym originally stood for 'Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, Law-Enforcement Divisio. In 1991 the name was changed to 'Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate'. In the current Marvel Cinematic Universe, established by Whedon's "The Avengers" movie, the acronym stands for 'Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division'.



S.H.I.E.L.D.'s  most persistent enemy is 'HYDRA', a fanatical terrorist organization founded by former Third Reich war criminal 'Baron Wolfgang von Strucker'.
