IDW's "Star Trek 2" Movie Prequel - May 30, 2012

IDW Publishing's "Star Trek" #9, available May 30, 2012, is a prequel to director JJ Abrams' upcoming Paramount release, "Star Trek 2", opening May 17, 2013.

"The Return of the Archons-Part 1" is written by Mike Johnson and illustrated by Stephen Molnar, with covers by Tim Bradstreet and Joe Phillips :

"...the countdown to the next 'Star Trek' movie continues here in 'The Return of the Archons', as 'Kirk', 'Spock' and the crew search for a lost 'Starfleet' ship that may hold clues to the future of the entire 'Federation'..."

"Star Trek 2", shooting January to April 2012, was according to  Abrams, who also directed the first "Star Trek" feature film reboot, lensed on film with anamorphic instead of 3D.

"We’d done 3D tests," said Abrams about "Star Trek 2". "We actually converted a bunch of the original movie, which looked really good. That was the thing that made me feel like, maybe that would be okay. But, I didn’t want to shoot the movie digitally. So it will be converted, for those who want to see it in 3D.

"I think the job of the first movie was just to establish it. I don’t want to give anything away, but I would say that the burden we had in the first movie was just existing at all. With this movie, instead of having to stand on the shoulders of the original series, we built a little bit of a platform to tell this story."
