"The Avengers" Assemble $178 Million



Thanks to savvy marketing and critical praise for writer/director Joss Whedon's Marvel Comics'-based superhero team-up, "The Avengers", Disney reports it has assembled $178 million at the international box office for the 3D action feature, one week ahead of its North American debut, with a ranking of No. 1 in all 39 international theatrical markets it was released to.

"The Avengers" earned $24.7 million in the UK.,  $19.7 million from Australia, $15.9 million from Mexico and $12.9 million from Korea.


Other markets opening the film included Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, New Zealand and the Philippines. 




"The Avengers" opens in China, Russia, the US and Canada May 4, followed by a Japanese opening in August.

"The Avengers" stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson.

"The Avengers" is based on the Marvel comic book series, first published in 1963.
