"The Punisher" Targets Television

Fox has confirmed that Marvel Comics' 'Frank Castle', aka "The Punisher" will be developed by ABC Studios into an hour-long 'police procedural' TV series from Edward Allen Bernero ("Criminal Minds").

Pre-dating TV vigilante psycho "Dexter" who dispatches criminals in his own ruthless way, this version of 'Castle' will be an NYPD detective who becomes a skull-costumed death-dealing vigilante during his off-hours.

Created by writer Gerry Conway and illustrators John Romita, Sr. & Ross Andru, the anti-hero debuted in Marvel Comics' "The Amazing Spider-Man" #129 (February 1974), as a cold-blooded killer waging a non-stop war against crime.

Driven by the deaths of his wife and young children who were killed when they witnessed a crime in New York City's Central Park, the 'Punisher' vowed to wage a one-man war on all criminals, using all manner of conventional (and uncoventional) weaponry.

A war veteran, Castle is a master of martial arts, stealth tactics and guerrilla warfare.

In feature films, actor Dolph Lundgren portrayed Castle in 1989.

Thomas Jane was Castle in 2004.

Ray Stevenson was Castle in 2008.
