Amber Heard Makes The Cut For "Red Sonja"

Producer Avi Lerner, currently developing the sword 'n sorcery feature "Red Sonja" with Nu Image and Millennium Films, is in talks with Simon West ("The Mechanic") to direct the reboot, with actress Amber Heard ("Drive Angry"), Lerner's first choice to play the lead.

'Red Sonja' is a red-haired warrior who seeks vengeance on those who destroyed her family and to save 'Hyrkania' from the villain 'Kulan Gath'.

While the character is often credited to "Conan" author Robert E. Howard, the character was developed from another, unrelated Howard character by writer Roy Thomas and illustrator Barry Windsor-Smith, debuting in Marvel Comics' "Conan the Barbarian" #23 (February 1973).

The character currently appears monthly in the comic book series, "Queen Sonja", as well as a series of mini-series and one-shots, published by Dynamite Entertainment.

A "Red Sonja" feature film was also released in 1985, starring actress Brigitte Nielsen, directed by Richard Fleischer.
