Part science fiction thriller and dark comedy, Carpenter's paranoid film echoed fears of a declining economy, within a culture of greed and conspicuous consumption.
The more political elements of the film were derived from Carpenter's distaste with the commercialization of 1980's pop culture and politics.
"I began watching TV again," said Carpenter at the time, "and quickly realized that everything we see is designed to sell us something. It's all about wanting us to buy something. The only thing they want to do is take our money."
To this end, Carpenter thought of sunglasses as being the only tool to see the aliens as 'ghouls'.

Premise showed that the ruling class within the moneyed elite were actually 'aliens' managing human social affairs through the use of a hypnotic signal on top of a TV tower, concealing both their appearance and subliminal messages in the mass media.
