Guilds Try To Break A Bad "Hobbit"

Actors guilds including SAG and AFTRA have issued an alert against producers of "The Hobbit," advising members "not to accept work on this non-union production."

The guilds said producers of the upcoming MGM/New Line feature, to be directed by Peter Jackson ("Lord Of The Rings"), have 'rebuffed' efforts by the New Zealand unit of an Australian actors union to organize the picture, as Jackson, WingNut Films and Weta Digital continue to prep the adaptation of author J.R.R. Tolkien's novel.

Letters have been written by the International Federation of Actors (FIA), Australia’s MEAA, and others complaining that the producers have refused to sign a union contract.

The 'do not work' order effectively halts the participation of the rumoured cast led by actors Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving and Ian McKellen.
